Start with the application, not the badge
An AI PC is a mainstream business computer with a neural processing unit, or NPU, designed to handle compatible AI tasks efficiently. Typical uses include background effects, transcription, noise removal and features built into productivity applications. For everyday office users, it can provide useful capability without the power consumption or cost of a professional workstation.
When a workstation becomes worthwhile
A workstation is designed for heavier, sustained workloads. Professional processors, greater memory capacity, certified drivers and dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics can make a material difference in CAD, 3D rendering, engineering, video production, data science and local model development. The benefit is not simply that the machine is faster: it is built to remain stable under demanding use and to support specialist applications.
CPU, NPU and GPU do different jobs
The CPU remains responsible for general computing. The NPU is optimised for efficient, often continuous AI features. A dedicated GPU provides the parallel processing required by demanding visual and AI workloads. Buying the highest specification in every category is rarely necessary. A user running cloud-based AI tools may need no more than a well-specified commercial laptop, while a designer or analyst running models locally may benefit greatly from professional graphics and additional memory.
A practical way to choose
List the applications, file sizes, datasets and models each role genuinely uses. Check the software vendor's recommended hardware and whether professional GPU certification matters. Then allow sensible headroom for the expected lifecycle of the device. This produces a more defensible specification than applying the same premium configuration to every user.
